This
mudra or hand gesture with a book of scripture is unusual and rarely
seen in depictions of the Buddha. The hands are held level with
the heart and are indicative of teaching and turning the Wheel of
Law.
This
series of new paintings are inspired by actual cave paintings from
Dunhuang, China. What began as a resotration project, has gradually
evolved into a full-fledged reinvention.
The
essence of Dunhuang painting lies with it's diversity of influences
making it a truly unique and international art form. The execution
of the faces are clearly Tang Dynasty. The flowing garments and
delicate line are indicative of India and Ghandara. The strong sense
of inner strength and vitality are additional hallmarks of Indian
painting and sculpture. The halo and lotus reveal influence from
Tibetan painting.
Steven
Yang has clearly taken Dunhuang art and raised it to a new level.
Using a mixture of media including cutting edge imaging software
and hardware tools and traditional methods, Steven Yang has accentuated
the laser precision and detail of Dunhuang painting and made it
even more revealing.
While
most artwork made with digital tools seems cold and stiff, Steven
Yang's mastery of line, color and unique use of cutting edge technological
tools actually brings more warmth and energy to this facinating
art form.
Not
satisfied with merely "reproducing" Dunhuang painting,
Steven Yang takes an already diverse international art form and
merged it yet again with contemporary elements of "pop art"
indicitive of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. What appears to
be ancient art is actually a fresh and vital new art form never
before seen. The context of this radical new departure actually
enhances the spiritual content of Buddhist art by further enhancing
Buddhist concepts such as transparency, illusion, duality, and multiplicity.
Steven
Yang's Dunhuang painting series retains all of the warmth and energy
of an original Dunhuang painting conservationist effort. Steven
takes this knowledge and has transformed it into an exciting and
distinctly modern new movement of postmodernism. As the seeds of
Buddhism and Asia penetrate and flourish in the west, so does the
artwork of Steven Yang.
